    Solarwinds is seeking a Chief Technologist (CT) to be responsible for developing the technology strategy for the Federal Government Marketplace.  As the Chief Technologist for SolarWinds Federal Government Team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the technology strategy the company develops and deploys in the Federal markets for the various monitoring and management products within SolarWinds.  These products include but are no limited to management and monitoring of network, storage, server, virtual machine, database, security, help desk, etc. – all available as On-Premise and Cloud solutions.  As a prerequisite, the candidate should have a deep understanding of Hybrid IT infrastructure and applications, security operations, Federal Cloud initiatives and demonstrated history in solving complex problems in matrix organizations. The role requires an experienced technology and business leader, as he/she will manage senior and executive level relationships both within SolarWinds and with our customers.  The Chief Technologist for SolarWinds Federal Government Team should continue to strive for results for our client’s success with SolarWinds technology solutions, which drives continued profitability and growth in the Federal marketplace.


    Primary job responsibilities:

    • Federal Customer Insight: Takes a consultative approach to consolidate and communicate federal customers’ technical requirements, and infuse this knowledge throughout the company – both within federal, and into the development of the company’s technical solutions. He/she must also be able to translate SolarWinds technology capabilities into mission-relevant outcomes for federal customers.
    • Technology Strategy: Drives end-to-end business planning across SolarWinds leadership team and key stakeholdersrelated to the continued development of the SolarWinds solutions portfolio tuned to the Federal segments. He/she will provides expert guidance and direction to technology solutions and process improvements; help establish policies and procedures to strengthen ongoing innovation; identify potential acquisitions in the federal marketplace; and  helps build alignment on opportunities in the federal market across a diverse set of functional stakeholders including sales, SEs, marketing, business development, product strategy, SolarWinds CTO, CIO, and CEO.
    • Business Development: Partners with sales, business development, technology strategy, marketing, and federal SEs to drive strategic pursuit, and help with significant business opportunities. Activities to support and drive new business growth include running executive briefings; capture process support, solution architecture, and more, to drive new business growth.
    • Strategic Partnerships: Works closely with Channel Sales, sales, SEs and business development to develop and manage technical content for strategic partnerships (channel, vendor, and others) to advance strategically important initiatives.
    • External Thought Leadership:  Work with marketing and PR in support of SolarWinds awareness and thought leadership activities such as press interviews, articles, analyst meetings, conference/industry presentations, video interviews, and more to drive increased visibility of SolarWinds federal technology portfolio and strength in the federal marketplace.
    • Federal Compliance: Work with SolarWinds technical leadership and product strategy on the design, development, and implementation of technology solutions that are fully compliant with various statutes, policies and regulations. This includes security requirements such as FIPS and Common Criteria, contract-specific regulations, and procurement regulations. Complies with all SolarWinds’ legal and business policies in all work performed.
    • Leadership: Flexible, results-focused leadership to get things done efficiently, effectively, and in tight timeframes, balanced with business performance goals.  Responsibilities also include providing Federal technical and marketplace guidance to senior SolarWinds Leadership, Product Strategy, product management, and to the federal team.



    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent
    • At least ten years of leadership experience in technology field
    • Experience working successfully in distributed and/or matrix organizations
    • Expertise in the product development process and experience in managing a complex, diverse technology portfolio
    • Experience in federal and/or national market – e.g. DoD, Civilian and/or Intelligence agencies
    • Advanced knowledge and experience in Hybrid IT management and monitoring technologies in infrastructure (network, server, compute, storage, etc.) and application (middleware, database, application frontend, etc.) layers
    • Experience with US Federal government contracting
    • Familiarity with Federal Acquisition Regulations and federal procurement processes.
    • Excellent team building skills – able to get results through influence, while working with geographically and functionally diverse teams
    • A history of credible thought leadership who is viewed and sought out as a key advisor internally and externally
    • A results-oriented, independent, decisive leader who is willing to take risks
    • Excellent presentation and communication skills when engaging with various levels of stakeholders, from SolarWinds users, to senior federal agency leadership, and across all levels within the company




    • Master’s degree or equivalent experience. Educational background in a technical or business field desired
    • Prior C-level position highly desired, especially from government space
    • Federal security clearance highly desirable.
    • Experience with multiple technology stacks (LAMP, Microsoft, Container-based, etc.)
    • Experience with Cloud Infrastructure and associated services (AWS, Azure, GCP, Rackspace, Softlayer, etc.)


    Travel:  25% to 50%  (must be willing to work out of the SolarWinds – Federal Office in Herndon, VA on a daily basis when not traveling.  Geographic proximity desirable.)
